Available in two varieties, first is the E5-2600 series for the mainstay of the server market, systems with two processor sockets. Second is the E5-1600 series chiefly for single-socket workstations.
The Xeon E5 supports up to eight cores per processor, but Hyper Threading effectively doubles that to 16 per socket. The new processors also support more memory – up to 768GB in 24 slots – providing more DRAM for software applications and virtual machines to work with.
The 17 new processors range from quad-core, 1.8GHz E5-2603 to the top-of-the line, 2.9GHz E5-2690, which boasts eight cores, 16 threads, 20MB of L3 cache.
The Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 product family is also the first server processors to integrate the I/O controller supporting PCI Express 3.0 directly into the microprocessor (which reduces I/O latency up to 30% compared to prior generations).
Intel claims the Xeon E5 can also improve energy efficiency by more than 50 percent, reducing total cost of ownership and helping customers to meet their growing data demands. In terms of I/O, the E5 processors include Intel Data Direct, which allows Ethernet routers and adapters to route I/O traffic directly to the processor cache, reducing power consumption and latency.
