Debian Servers

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the computer and does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs.

Fully Compatible Debian Servers

Broadberry can install and configure Debian onto our CyberStore range of enterprise-grade storage servers, giving you a full-fledged storage appliance at a great price.

Debian is a free OS that was created through The Debian Project. A group of people came together for the common purpose of creating an operating system that anybody and everybody would be free to use. Many of this system's basic tool are made up of tools from the GNU project which explains many of the names; such as GNU/Linux, GNU/kFreeBSD, GNU/Hurd, etc.

Debian OS comes with 51,000 packages which can be managed through package manager (APT) as well as a number of other utilities. These tools make it possible for you to manage a huge number of packages on a large number of different machines, which is made as easy as just installing a single application. Installation is simple and if you wish you can even have a Broadberry engineer complete the full installation for you.

As it is open source, Debian is a free storage software solution. In addition to initially being free, there are no hidden charges that you need to worry about if you choose to configure your CyberStore storage appliance with Debian OS.

The community around Debian is strong. The software is maintained by its large base of users and developers. Should any issue arise, it is usually handled very swiftly due to the collective power of the Debian community.

Should you need support for any issue or problem, you can call on the aforementioned community to come to your aid and by utilising online communities, your issues can be resolved very quickly.

The community pools their knowledge and experience together to increase the Debian experience for everyone. There is an active bug tracking system, which anyone can report bugs to. Once a bug has been identified, you can usually expect it to be dealt within a few days at the most.

When compared with alternative solutions on the market, Debian is high performing across the board. Lightweight and efficient, Debian is a great choice if you are looking for a fast OS that gets things done quick. Being based on either GNU/Linux or GNU/FreeBSD gives Debian a head start in the speed department so when installed on our range of enterprise-grade storage servers you'll have a blazing-fast storage appliance.

Security is taken very seriously by Debian. They are very responsive to any security issues and work to get them solved as soon as possible, with fixes being uploaded within a few days of the issue being brought up. Security is even more efficient when you consider the huge online community that uses Debian every day. Whenever a problem pops up, the combined efforts of the developers and community is enough to snuff out any danger in an impressive amount of time.

Issues with security are picked up a lot earlier with this solution than with many other operating systems because Debian's source code is freely available. When the source code can be examined openly be anybody, it creates a situation where poor quality security models are prevented. Unlike with many paid software where the source code is not so available and there are a lot less eyes on them which allows poor design to slip through.

Debian encourages users to send bug reports, which are added to their publicly available bug tracking system. This system helps Debian quickly and efficiently deal with any security bugs or issues that arise.

One of the strongest points of Debian is its great stability and consistency. The release policy of the creators behind Debian is to only release updates once they have ironed out all the bugs, thoroughly tested everything and otherwise ensured that there will be no issues.

While other operating systems tend to occasionally crash or have issues, Debian is remarkably consistent and stable. There are times where a machine running Debian can be running for more than a year without having to be rebooted.

It is maintained by its users.

  • If something needs to be fixed or improved, Debian just do it.

Unparalleled support

  • Mail sent to the mailing lists often gets answers within 15 minutes (or less), for free, and by the people who developed it. Compare that to typical phone support: hours spent on the phone, for money, only to get someone who doesn't know the system well enough to even understand your question.

You wouldn't be alone in your choice

  • A wide range of organisations and individuals use Debian.

The best packaging system in the world

  • Tired of old files from software three versions old cluttering your system? Or installing a piece of software only to find it causes your system to crash because of software conflicts? Dpkg, Debian's endured packaging system, takes care of these issues for you.

Easy installation

  • If you have heard that Debian is difficult to install, then you haven't tried Debian lately. Debian are constantly improving the installation process. You can do the installation directly from CD, DVD, Blu-ray, USB stick or even over the network.

Incredible amounts of software

  • Debian comes with over 51000 different pieces of software. Every bit of it is free. If you have proprietary software that runs under GNU/Linux or GNU/kFreeBSD, you can still use it - in fact, there may even be an installer in Debian that will automatically install and set up everything for you.

Packages well integrated

  • Debian surpasses all other distributions in how well its packages are integrated. Since all software is packaged by a coherent group, not only can all packages be found at a single site, but you can be assured that we have already worked out all issues regarding complicated dependencies.

Source code

  • If you are a software developer, you will appreciate the fact that there are hundreds of development tools and languages, plus millions of lines of source code in the base system. All of the software in the main distribution meets the criteria of the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG). This means that you can freely use this code to study from, or to incorporate into new free software projects. There are also plenty of tools and code suitable for use in proprietary projects.

Easy upgrades

  • Due to our packaging system, upgrading to a new version of Debian is a snap. Just run apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade (or aptitude update; aptitude dist-upgrade in newer releases) and you can upgrade from a CD in a matter of minutes or point apt at one of the over 300 Debian mirrors and upgrade over the net.

Multiple architectures and kernels

  • Currently Debian supports an impressive number of CPU architectures: alpha, amd64, armel, hppa, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, and sparc. It also runs on GNU Hurd and FreeBSD kernels besides Linux, and with the debootstrap utility you will be hard-pressed to find a device that can't run Debian.

Bug tracking system

  • Debian's bug tracking system is publicly available. We don't try to hide the fact that software doesn't always work the way users want. Users are encouraged to submit bug reports and are notified when and why the bug was closed. This system allows Debian to respond to problems quickly and honestly.

Stability

  • There are many cases of machines that run for over a year without rebooting. Even then, they are only rebooted due to a power failure or a hardware upgrade. Compare that to other systems that crash multiple times a day.

Fast and easy on memory

  • Other operating systems may be as fast in one or two areas, but being based on GNU/Linux or GNU/kFreeBSD, Debian is lean and mean. Windows software run from GNU/Linux using an emulator sometimes runs faster than when run in the native environment.

Good system security

  • Debian and the free software community are very responsive to make sure that fixes of security problems get into the distribution quickly. Usually, fixed packages are uploaded within a few days. The availability of source code allows the security in Debian to be evaluated in an open setting which prevents poor security models from being implemented. Also, most free software projects have peer-review systems, which prevents potential security problems from being introduced in essential systems in the first place.

Security software

  • Unknown to many, anything sent over the net can be read by any machine between you and the receiver. Debian has packages of the famous GPG (and PGP) software which allows mail to be sent privately between users. In addition, ssh allows you to create secure connections to other machines which have ssh installed.

Multi
Award-Winning

Year-after-year, the Broadberry CyberStore range of unified storage appliances has beaten the likes of Dell and HPE to be crowned "Best Storage Appliance" by PC Pro magazine.

Outstanding
Value

When compared to the likes of DELL, HPE, EMC etc, the Broadberry CyberStore range of enterprise-grade unified storage appliances is up to 60% cheaper, although using the same quality components such as Seagate drives and Kingston RAM.

Compatible with your
Favourite Software

The Bradberry CyberStore range has been built from industry-leading commodity hardware, and carefully designed to ensuure full compatibility with leading storage operating systems and database engines.

Lower Cost, Same Components

Broadberry enterprise storage appliances are on average 86% lower cost than EMC and 55% lower cost than DELL although built using the same leading-brand server components such as Intel processors and Samsung memory. HPE hard drives are rebadged Toshiba enterprise-class drives, the exact same models as found in Broadberry storage appliances.

Hard Drive Caddies Included

When you buy a Broadberry storage appliance all drive bays are supplied with caddies - so if in 6 months time you decide to expand the storage you can source it freely from the marketplace or ourselves if you wish. The only way to add hard drives to HPE servers is to buy the drives along with caddies from HPE for 200% the price of Broadberry's price.

No Ongoing Licence Costs

Broadberry storage appliances come with enterprise-grade features like IPMI included, whereas HPE charge large fees for perpetual licences for the same features.

Instant, Accurate Quotations

Our website allows you to configure your server online with accurate prices, as opposed to NetApp who require several face-to-face meetings with them before they'll give you a price.

Market Moving Away from Tier 1 Vendors

Over recent years there's been a massive move from the world's largest organisations such as Google to purchase their servers from the likes of Broadberry rather than DELL and HPE. This move is fuelled by the rise in commodity hardware.
