Onsite and Offsite data protection in Open-E JovianDSS delivers an effective strategy for Backup, Archiving and Disaster Recovery through enabling asynchronous replication to local sites or co-locations.
Local backups are kept at your main business location, either on the same server with extra internal drives/external drives or on other Open-E JovianDSS-based servers. This is the most ideal type of backup to protect data in case of ransomware attacks, hardware failure or similar disasters. Data restore is much easier and quicker with local backup than with remote off-site backups. This makes on-site backups the ideal solution for hot data, as its restorable with little downtime.
Off-site backups are back up to a different geographical location. These kinds of backups secure data in case of disasters like theft, fire, flood, and power outages. If such a disaster was to occur, data could be restored to the new location. Or in certain solutions, the backup will be able to take the role of the primary server and the data can be accessed immediately. It's possible to set up multiple backup locations and data transfer is secured by encryption. This type of backup is also very effective for archiving.
You are able to create consistent snapshots and asynchronously replicate snapshot deltas to local or remote destinations. To ensure secure archiving, replication tasks can be scheduled in reference to specific user requirements. Off-site data protection is the tactic of storing vital data away from the main business location as part of a disaster recovery plan.
Offsite replication is often a cost-effective option, with there usually being little to no setup costs. With Open-E JovianDSS data edits happen in real-time and data recovery is fast and efficient.
Transferring information between data centres is simple and convenient, with the only requisite being an internet connection or a dedicated ethernet connection. Once critical data is transferred to a reliable, offsite backup facility, it can easily be stored, shared and managed.
Open-E JovianDSS stores data with checksums and uses atomic commits of transactions groups every 5 seconds by default. This works effectively as a random to sequential IO conversion and rapidly accelerates random writes.
Checksums are calculated again while data is read and are then compared with the originally stored checksums. If there is a matching error, data is recreated from parity or read from a mirror, with the bad block being automatically redirected to a new one. This feature is referred to as self-healing and essentially guarantees complete data integrity.
Incomplete writes are avoided completely and the storage pool is always consistent, which leaves little need for file system check or repair tools. The pool is always prepared for import following a hardware crash. Over time, data corruption may occur due to cosmic radiation of magnetic media errors. The scrub tool, which is run periodically, automatically repairs all errors.
With Open-E JovianDSS on- and off-site data protection, you can create rotational auto-snapshots of NAS or SAN volumes according to instructed set by a retention-interval plan.
If required, differences between snapshots are asynchronously replicated to the local or remote destinations. You can utilise different retention plans for source and destination pools and can set up multiple destinations for higher data security and redundancy. Snapshots can be easily be created every minute or more often if required.
The Open-E JovianDSS On- and Off-site Data Protection retention-interval plan is made up of a sequence of retention periods to interval associations. It's based on ZFS snapshots and ZFS send-receive. There is near zero system load cost of snapshot creation and maintenance. The send-receive function allows for an immediate access to data changes between consecutive snapshots, it can also start replicating data differences each minute.
With replication being frequent and typically regarding small data changes, backup can often be done in the background and with a marginal system load. Backups can be made around the clock and it's possible to access all previous versions, as well as undergo faster disaster recovery if needed. This is a massive benefit Open-E JovianDSS offers over regular backup solution which often generate heavy changes and are only scheduled to run after-hours.
There are two key factors we can utilise to measure disaster recovery efficiency.
